Romain Jerome Moon Dust - Watch Collection Contains Actual Moon Dust
As most of us will never have the opportunity to walk on the Moon, Swiss watchmaker
Romain Jerome has brought a piece of the Moon to Earth, in the second of its "
DNA
of Famous Legends
" series, Romain Jerom Moon Dust DNA. Paying
homage to the major players in the space race of the 1950s and 60s, the timepieces
in this collection are inspired by all things celestial and include authentic cosmic
memorabilia, such as Moon dust, steel from the Apollo XI space shuttle and fibers
from suits worn in space.

On July 20, 1969, millions of viewers around the world gathered in front of their
televisions to witness the first manned Moon landing, with Neil Armstrong and Buzz
Aldrin. This feat accomplished the goal of President John F. Kennedy, to beat the
Soviet Union in landing a man on the Moon. More than a decade later both the United
States and the Soviets would no longer compete, but unite in space exploration,
resulting in the International Space Station. The Romain Jerome Moon Dust DNA collection
not only celebrates the accomplishments of the United States, but of the 15 nations
collaborating in the ISS.
With an appropriate 1,969 limited edition watches created, the
Romain Jerome Moon
Dust DNA
collection incorporates actual Moon dust mixed with natural pigments
and applied to the dial, creating the look of the deep and varied hues of the Moon´s
surface. Some watches also exhibit a patented process of mixing Moon dust with silver,
known as Moon Silver. The case contains steel fragments and carbon fibers from the
Apollo XI space vessel. Fabric from actual ISS spacesuits is woven into the band.
The authentic relics are showcased by dials dotted with tiny craters, hands crafted
to represent solar panels on spacecraft and a second hand designed to look like
a landing target. Each watch comes with a certificate of authenticity and a guarantee
of origin from the Association of Space Explorers.
The mission of the high-end Swiss watch company is to create "a celebration
of history on the wrist". Founded in 2004, the
Romain Jerome "DNA of Famous
Legends" watches
have been especially coveted by collectors due to
the uniqueness of the celebrated historical elements. The Moon Dust DNA collection
is just one of three of the famous legends collections: The Titanic DNA collection
includes steel fragments and coal dust from the ill-fated passenger ship and the
Eyjafjallajokull DNA collection includes ash from the actual Icelandic volcano.
