History of Cartier – Well Established Brand Name that Started in Paris

Louis-Francois Cartier took over a watch shop in 1847 in Paris and Cartier was born. His son, Alfred, took over the company in 1874; however, it was Alfred Cartier´s three sons that made Cartier the internationally known brand name that it still is today. Louis, one of the three grandsons of the original owner, created the first men´s wristwatch called the Santos.

Baignoire and Tortue watch collections were created in 1912 and have remained popular enough that they are still being sold today. In 1932 this brand name created the Cartier Tank which became a signature watch. This collection has over 30 varieties still being made today.

In the early 1920´s a joint venture was established between Cartier and Jaeger. Jaeger had produced watch movements for Cartier but the joint venture created a deal where he would make movements exclusively for Cartier. The Cartier brand name is known for having a four digit stamped number on each watch. If this number is not found, the watches are not desired by watch collectors.

After the death of the last grandson in1974 their children sold Cartier and today it is owned by a group of investors. The owners keep the main three locations of New York, Paris and London and uphold the name to be associated with very high quality watches and jewelry.
